JAPN300: Introduction to advanced communication
Course Description: "This is a bridge course from intermediate to advanced Japanese language. Students expand their cultural knowledge and language by investigating and comparing a broader range of topics in Japanese. Taught in Japanese."
MLOs addressed in this course:
- MLO 1: Japanese Language and Communication
JAPN300 was a course I took right before studying abroad in Japan, and it was one of the many courses that helped enhance my knowledge of the Japanese language. The course is used as a bridge for students transitioning from intermediate to advanced levels of Japanese. This class focused on presentation style speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. We would usually interact in groups during the class, and each group would read mini Japanese dialogues to develop our interpersonal skills. We also had multiple oral presentations focusing on a multitude of topics. One of my favorite presentations involved me talking greatly about the Santa Cruz area and my camping experiences there.
I took a lot away from this course but I would say that it helped me the most in preparing me for my study abroad experience in Japan. Before I took this course, I felt ill-prepared for my next year abroad in Japan, but a lot of the vocabulary and grammar we learned greatly benefited me while I was abroad. At the same time, this course also greatly prepared me for my final year at CSUMB, since a lot of the grammar and vocabulary became necessary for my JAPN380 and capstone courses. I hope to greatly use what I have learned here in Japan and onward in my future career.
