mlo 4: Research & Technology
4.1 Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.
4.2 Students use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3 Students collect, manage, and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Courses completed towards this MLO:
- WLC 400: Major Capstone
- JAPN403: Pre-Capstone
- JAPN404: Adv. Japanese for Presentation Communication
4.1 Capstone is the culminating factor of all of the research that I have done here in the Japanese department at CSUMB. During 404, we were taught how to write out research information in Japanese and that allowed us to develop our survey questions findings section of the PowerPoint, but also aided us in the analysis of our survey in general. Most of the information learned in this course transferred over nicely to capstone since it was a supplementary class for that project.
4.2 WLC300 and capstone were both classes that allowed me to learn how to use the library database to it's full potential in the pursuit of our capstone. I learned about different research tools like CiNii, Google Scholar, and how to use my own library's database to it's full potential. It made finding articles for our paper incredibly easy since I now had methods to look up articles not only in English but also in Japanese. One of the biggest benefits that we learned about from the system was that it allowed us to request books from other libraries through our school's inter-library loan program.
4.3 There are so many ways to find different data on the internet nowadays but it was actually pretty difficult to discern what could be used as an academic source for our paper and what we had to take out. The best thing about capstone and WLC300 is that we we're given clear guidelines on what information could be used and what could not be used. There were also tools given to us that made citing things in APA easier than I had previously known. Our capstone was on The Link Between Fast Food and University Life in the United States, and it was actually pretty difficult finding information that was relevant to our topic 100% of the time. However, I feel as though we did a good job. I think in the future I would like to do another health based study, or another study on an issue that faces students in both countries. The tools I learned about here will greatly aid me in my next endeavors.
