wlc400: wlc major capstone
Course description: "Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisors to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also assemble a Graduation Portfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese, Spanish and World Languages and Cultures majors."
MLOs addressed in this course:
- MLO 1: Japanese Language and Communication
- MLO 4: Research & Technology
In WLC400, the main focus of this class was to write the English portion of our capstone project. This course met the requirement for MLO 1 and MLO 4 due to the nature of the research that we we're conducting to complete our project. Most if not all of the research was either searched for in English (then later translated to Japanese) or in Japanese. This course expanded what little knowledge I had about doing research in Japanese, but it also allowed me to practice my translation skills by converting articles from one language to the other.
The latter half of the course focused on finishing our capstone presentation, paper, and script. These elements were translated from English to Japanese, and tested our academic writing skills and potential. In JAPN404, we augmented what we learning in this course by learning about academic writing and speaking styles. Translation was one of the many keys to getting this project done, however, our speaking skills were also tested by the mini-presentations that we gave in-class regarding our project. Our ending capstone presentation title was The Link Between Fast Food and University Life; if you are interested in learning more about it please click here!
