JAPN404: Advanced Japanese for Presentational Communication
Course description: "This course aims to develop an advanced level of academic communication to finalize research projects using appropriate research methods. Students analyze and synthesize their research findings to orally present and to write academic papers using APA style. This course is a companion course for WLC 400 (Major Capstone)."
MLOs addressed in this course:
- MLO 1: Japanese Language and Communication
- MLO 4: Research and Technology
JAPN404 was a course that helped augment my Japanese so that I could better prepare for my senior capstone. The course primarily focused on teaching us proper written Japanese, and speaking Japanese techniques for our Japanese presentation and paper. The first part of the course felt more like a traditional class with lessons solely focused on vocabulary and grammar that we would need to use in our paper. The second half of the course focused on practice presentations so that we could better prepare for our actual capstone presentation. During this time, we also created our Japanese script that we used to help write our paper. This course was a supplementary course that went along with my senior capstone course where we mainly focused on the English side of my capstone presentation.
This course combined everything that I had been working on my senior year and allowed me push my understanding of Japanese further. I initially started working on my capstone in fall 2016 when I took pre-capstone. Although I do not believe that my Japanese level has increased much in this past year because this course along with many others relied on all of my previous knowledge; I truly feel as though I have a better grasp of how to do research in Japanese and in English. I hope that in the future when I'm working on getting my masters degree that I can use my capstone project as a reference. I would be interested in doing another research project comparing Japan and the US in the future.
