wlc300: WLC MAJor Proseminar
Course description: "This course introduces students to the majors in Japanese Language and Culture, Spanish or World Language and Cultures. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs. Students identify and work with a major advisor to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, including graduate education and teaching credential preparation."
In WLC300, the main focus of the class was to introduce our individual major requirements and to get us started on completing them. The beginning portion of the course focused on teaching us the meaning and thought behind each individual MLO that we have to address in this E-portfolio. We also focused a lot on our career and professional goals in the long term, and even developed a resume and personal statement. Another major requirement of the course was developing the first phase of this E-portfolio that we have to eventually finish in our major capstone class, WLC 400. We were taught how to create the shell of our website, and different techniques to make each of our portfolios unique in their own way.
This class opened up my mind to the possible career opportunities that are available in my future. I was given the opportunity to talk to older CSUMB graduates that work now work for corporations like Google, and NPO organizations. Towards the tail end of the semester, we also took a trip to the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, which is a graduate school that I am very interested in going to in the future. As a language major, I was still unsure of what I would do in the future, even as a senior student. Knowing multiple languages is a great skill for anybody to have, but I was unaware of the many job opportunities that are actually available to people like us. After taking the STAMP language proficiency test during this course, I realized that my language skills were greatly beyond where I expected them to be. However, it also made me realize that there is still so much more that I still need to do before I can consider myself to be fluent in the language. My long term goals are to not only master the Japanese language, but to also tackle other languages like Korean and Chinese.
